What drives you to listen to an artist or band? What leads you to learn more about their work and where you can catch them playing next? Is it a blurry, badly taken photo that barely shows who they are? Or is it an interesting, high quality image that reflects the authentic vibe of the artist? Is it a feeling or mood presented visually that conveys the messages in their music? When I photograph a band, I am thinking about these elements constantly. For someone who shoots live music a lot, it makes sense to me to think about the sounds and incorporate that into promotional photos. I listen to the band's music before the shoot and talk with them about what they want to convey in the photos. We create a very relaxed atmosphere during the shoot and then we have some serious fun.
Photographing artists for promotional images has come organically as the next step in my business. When I first started photographing concerts I did not have a long term plan to include band promotional photography in my arsenal of services. But more and more the artists and managers I knew started asking me--and it seemed like a perfect way to expand my skills and interests in music photography. Over the last few years, I have been steadily photographing images for multiple uses including press kits, social media, album covers, magazines and websites.
My assistant Sarah & I scout locations prior to the day of the shoot and we work together to create high quality images to catapult your career to the next level.
